A SCAR is the customer-side document that opens a supplier corrective-action case. Here is how the two sides of the table should work it — and where SCAR and 8D connect.
SCAR vs 8D
SCAR
Issued by the customer or SQE: it identifies the nonconformance, sets deadlines, requests containment and demands a corrective-action report.
8D
The supplier's structured answer: D0–D8 investigation that satisfies the SCAR and produces verifiable evidence.
How to respond
Contain first — inventory check, clean point and certified date code within the stated deadline.
Investigate — evidence-based root cause, including why your own controls missed it.
Correct — permanent action with effectiveness data, not an intention.
Close the loop — prevention in FMEA and control plan, plus horizontal deployment to similar parts.
